Why a Saint Name?
In preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, saints are chosen as someone who we want to be like, who can pray for us from heaven and can accompany us in our daily lives. Saints are role models and intercessors who have lived a spirit of holiness to which we aspire. Saints have been known to bear witness to God’s love to others even amid tremendous challenges. The new name can signify that we are a new creation, living a new life as we are confirmed in our Catholic faith. We see in biblical times that a new name represented a new time in one’s life with a great devotion to God. For example, Abram became Abraham (Gen 17:5), Jacob became Israel (Gen 35:10), Simon became Peter (Mt 16:17-18), and Saul became Paul (Acts 13:9).
